BOWLES AND WYER - PRINCIPAL AWard WINNER 2017
18 ADDISON AVENUE
The owner of this garden wanted to develop the space into a secluded courtyard garden where she could relax and entertain. Being an experienced garden designer herself, having trained at the English School of Garden Design, she set about reorganising the space. Working alongside Bowles & Wyer’s maintenance team, plant selections were discussed and a few select plants were retained, including a Phyllostachys vivax aureocualis and two olive trees in the side border.
Alan Hayward was used to create the Iroko trellis. The feature olive tree, which was craned over the rear wall by Crocus, was underplanted with Erigeron karvinskianus to evoke a memory of a former garden that the client owned in France. Sculptures were set on oak pedestals and most of the planting went in relatively small. The owner was happy to wait for plants to mature, allowing them to be shaped to fit the proportions of the space. The garden planting has a strong sculptural quality, throughout which seasonal flowers interweave and meander. Having maintained the garden since its creation, the maintenance team has been able to realise the owner’s design.
