the petwood hotel

Famous as the home of the legendary RAF 617 Dambusters Squadron in 1944/45, The Petwood Hotel also boasts gardens designed in 1912 by celebrated designer Harold Peto. Although located in the heart of Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, for over 100 years the historic gardens had fallen into disrepair and been subject to vandalism and theft of original seats, sculptures and urns.

Only basic maintenance was being undertaken to ensure safety. The owners wanted to restore and upgrade the historic gardens as they had been designed and originally realised in 1913/14. With the hotel remaining open throughout the works, the contractor rebuilt the Temple of Atalanta, installing a new stone temple with cast iron domed roof, new floor slabs and steps.

The Long Walk paving was removed, restored and blended, and the Horley Festoon was reinstated, drainage installed and lawns re-laid. Flowerbeds were re-established, the fountain refurbished, paving re-laid and balustrading rebuilt on the rear terrace. Paving was also removed and re-laid to install drainage in the Dutch sunken garden, turf was replaced and the fountain here also refurbished.

The contractor worked solely from historical photographs to resurrect the gardens.
