The Hawkhills in the Vale of York has a fascinating history and is home to The Emergency Planning College, which is approved by the Civil Contingencies Secretariat of the Cabinet Office to deliver training to assist with organisational resilience.

Operated by Serco it is also a popular venue for weddings, conferences, team building and corporate away-days, training events, charity functions, social events and meetings.

The grounds maintenance contract comprises grass cutting, bedding displays, hedge and shrub maintenance, tree maintenance, leaf clearance, weed control, road sweeping, and snow and ice clearance and gritting. The site is maintained by one operative and an apprentice who, despite a limited budget, are reinvigorating formerly neglected areas through a programme of shrub and plant replacement, with a number of the plants being propagated on site. Additionally, overgrown woodland areas are being slowly opened up for walkers and runners.
